Staff from a Ruddington pharmacy are prescribing themselves fresh air and exercise this summer as they fundraise for a leading cancer charity.
N.B. This walk has now been postponed due to continuing Coronavirus restrictions and will be rescheduled for July 2022.
Five employees from Evans Pharmacy on Charles Street are taking part in the ‘Peak District Mighty Hike 2021’ on Saturday July 24th. This is a 13 mile trek starting at Darley Moor and concluding at the Biggin Village Playing Fields. They’ll be taking in some beautiful Derbyshire scenery along the way whilst raising cash for Macmillan Cancer Support – a charity which aims to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can by providing physical, financial and emotional support.
Wendy Purdy, Diana Bradshaw, Emma Bassford and Byron Gillespie (pictured top) along with Matt Smith from our Ruddington branch have called themselves collectively ‘Wendy’s Walkers’. Each participant has pledged to raise £250 for the charity – and training for the big day has already begun! At the moment, due to COVID-19 constraints, they are undertaking local walks of between six to eight miles but are are hoping to travel further afield to get in some hill walking, too, once a lifting of restrictions allows.
Wendy explains: “Each of us individually have had family members and/or friends who have been affected by cancer. Also it is an illness that affects a great many number of our customers.”
Emma adds: “I have very personal reasons for doing this walk. I have the ‘braca’ gene on my dad’s side of the family that has affected a huge part of the female side. I also have many friends that have lost parents at a young age. Working in this environment means we see many people affected by this disease and the effects on the people who are left behind or have to care for loved ones.”
